UK national security adviser Jonathan Powell has taken on a central role in negotiations between the US and Ukraine, working to maintain diplomatic momentum amid ongoing tensions, Politico reports. Powell, a seasoned negotiator and former chief of staff to Tony Blair, was involved in drafting a ceasefire proposal alongside Ukrainian officials in Kyiv last week.

The initiative follows the contentious Oval Office meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in late February, which strained Wahington-Kyiv relations and complicated ongoing talks to end the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war. Powell traveled to Kyiv ahead of the Saudi-hosted discussions between US and Ukrainian officials, working directly with Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andrii Yermak, to craft the proposal.

Powell is returning to Washington, DC, today with European colleagues to meet Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, in an effort to sustain diplomatic progress. The UK’s involvement places Powell at the heart of ceasefire negotiations, reflecting Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s commitment to keeping diplomatic channels open between Kyiv and Washington.

The proposal faces significant obstacles, with Russian President Vladimir Putin imposing heavy conditions on any potential agreement. However, Powell and his team remain engaged in discussions, working to navigate the complexities of the diplomatic landscape.

Powell’s experience in conflict resolution, particularly in the Northern Ireland peace process, has informed his approach to the Ukraine talks. He previously emphasized the importance of direct engagement, even with adversaries, arguing that dialogue should begin as early as possible to avert loss of life.

Despite Powell’s efforts, concerns remain about the long-term viability of the ceasefire proposal. Some critics argue that the UK is placing too much reliance on a single negotiator, while others highlight the difficulty of securing a sustainable peace agreement with Russia.
