Over 1700 children are considered missing in Ukraine due to war – Ministry of Internal Affairs

Ukraine’s Unified Register of Missing Persons Under Special Circumstances contains data on more than  1,700 Ukrainian children, reports Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Leonid Tymchenko.

As of 29 October, over 52,000 people are registered in the Ministry of Internal Affairs registry, which keeps track of persons missing under special circumstances, Tymchenko said during a national television marathon broadcast.

The Ministry has established specialized search centers in regional capitals to assist families searching for relatives who may have disappeared due to military operations.

Russian forces have been documented systematically abducting Ukrainian children and deporting them to Russia, which constitutes a war crime under international law. Russian-installed authorities deported 40,000 children from occupied Ukrainian territories during the summer of 2024, according to the Regional Center for Human Rights.

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova in March 2023 for the unlawful deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia.
