Norway’s skies under lockdown as Oslo Airport closes twice in three days due to drone attacks

On the night from Sunday to Monday, two Norwegian flights were urgently rerouted due to the appearance of unidentified drones. Authorities are treating the incidents as a serious security threat, Polsat News reports.

Norway doesn’t say it was exactly a Russian drone attack. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation reports that the Kremlin has deployed drones, warplanes, and civilian tankers 18 times in September to pressure the West and undermine support for Ukraine. No measures have been implemented against Russia to stop the attacks. The US has also not imposed sanctions against the Kremlin.

This is not the first drone attack in Norway this year. Based on the number of reported events since summer 2025, it is clear that drone incidents in Norwegian airspace are increasing.

In the past month, from 22 September to 28 September 2025, Norway recorded at least three more drone attacks:

  • 22 September 2025: Large drones were spotted over Oslo Airport, causing its temporary closure.
  • 23 September: Oslo Airport was again closed due to drone activity; police detained two foreign nationals.
  • 27 September: Drones were detected in a restricted zone near Brønnøysund Airport.

Drones near Bardufoss and Brønnøysund airports

A Boeing 737 operated by Norwegian Airlines, traveling from Oslo to Bardufoss, had to return to Oslo Airport, Gardermoen, after an unknown drone was spotted near the runway.

Another flight, Widerøe from Bodø to Brønnøysund, was redirected to Trondheim, 200 km from its original destination.

Avinor, the company controlling Norway’s airspace, described the incidents as “serious” and confirmed that pilots followed emergency procedures.

Possible coordinated attacks

Bardufoss Airport holds strategic importance as it serves both civilian and military flights.

Avinor warns that repeated drone sightings may indicate coordinated actions against Norwegian airports.
Experts add that drones near runways pose a deadly risk to aircraft engines and could cause catastrophic accidents.

Authorities impose new restrictions

Due to the incidents, the Nordland police implemented a complete ban on drone flights near the airports in Bodø, Brønnøysund, Trondheim, and Andenes starting Monday at noon.

Law enforcement warns that violations carry severe consequences, and security measures will be intensified.

Earlier, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov denied Russia’s involvement in the latest drone attacks on Europe. He stated that accusations against Russia regarding unknown drones appearing over Copenhagen and Oslo are “groundless” and not worthy of attention.
