Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, said that this year’s New York cathedral memorial service commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor was conducted by Archbishop-Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Chuch in the USA Anatoliy, Archbishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Chuch in the USA Danyil, Archbishop-Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in the USA Borys Gudziak and sincerely congratulated by the Cardinal of the Catholic Church, Archbishop of New York Timothy Dolan.

Today’s event was especially moving. The cathedral was completely filled with people, and not only Ukrainians who came from different states to pray together and honor the memory of millions of Ukrainians who died as a result of the artificial famine planned and implemented by the Stalinist regime,” Markarova wrote.

Two witnesses of the Holodomor were present at the event – Yuriy Bazylevskyi and Nadiya Severyn. Ukrainian choir “Dumka,” under the direction of maestro Vasyl Grechynskyi, added a special atmosphere to the tribute.

A 30-meter flag of Ukraine was brought to the hall under the spiritual anthem of Ukraine, “Great and one God.” Ambassador Markarova and permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations, Serhiy Kyslytsia, held the flag in the first line.

For millions of Ukrainians, the Holodomor is not a matter of the past. It is a living history that continues to inflict deep wounds and painful scars on our collective national memory… Today, when we once again witnessed the genocide taking place before our eyes in Ukraine, we must call all our energy and spiritual endurance to resist the evil dictator. We must put an end to Russia’s centuries-long genocidal wars against Ukraine, with all their cruelty and savagery,” Oksana Markarova said in her speech.
