Czechia is running low on suitable weapons to send to Ukraine, Defence Minister Jana Černochová admitted on Czech television on 26 November, the day after the speaker of the lower house had made arms promises in Kyiv, Euroactiv reports.

On 25 November in Kyiv, Czech parliamentary speakers Markéta Pekarová Adamová and Miloš Vystrčil paid tribute to the victims of Stalin’s 1932-1933 Holodomor famine in Ukraine, recognized as a genocide by the Czech parliament last year.

Addressing Ukrainian Members of Parliament, lower house speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová reaffirmed Czechia’s commitment to providing military assistance to Ukraine. Miloš Vystrčil, the Senate (upper house) speaker, emphasized that Ukraine merits ongoing support, as it is not only defending its own interests but also those of other European democracies.

However, the Defense Minister of the Czech Republic said a day later:

“The Czech Republic is one of the leaders in aid. But frankly, there are not many things we can send to Ukraine from military material,” Jana Černochová admitted on Czech Television.

The Czech Republic plans to address this issue by granting export licenses to private firms, ensuring that its defense capabilities remain intact. Czechia has available production capacities through these private companies, which are well-regarded internationally. In addition to providing weapons and support for Ukraine’s integration into Euro-Atlantic structures, substantial training assistance is also being extended.

By the end of 2023, Czechia will have trained up to 4,000 members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Euroaktiv says.
