At least 27 crew members were injured in the attack on the Russian ship Sergey Kotov, destroyed near the Kerch Strait, Ukraine’s Military Intelligence reported on 6 March.

Group 13 of Ukraine’s Military Intelligence (HUR) destroyed the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s patrol ship Sergei Kotov near the Kerch Strait overnight on 5 March with the Magura V5 maritime drones. The HUR noted that the vessel costs about $65 million.

HUR reported on 5 March that seven Russian sailors were killed, and six were injured in the attack. Some 52 crew members on the ship reportedly managed to evacuate.

The patrol ship Sergey Kotov has been completely destroyed, according to HUR representative Yusov. He noted that this was not the first time the ship had been targeted. It had previously sustained successful attacks but was subsequently repaired.

Sergei Kotov was a Project 22160 patrol ship. The Project 22160 corvettes like the Sergei Kotov are Russian patrol ships with a displacement ranging from 1,300 to 1,700 tons, a length of 94 meters (308 feet), a beam of 14 meters (46 feet), and a draught of 3.4 meters (11 feet).

These ships are designed for coastal patrol and equipped with missile armament. Depending on the ship’s configuration and mission requirements, they typically have a crew of around 28 members, with additional space for up to 60 sailors.

Ukraine’s Military Intelligence started targeting Russian ships after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The first Russian sunk vessel was Moskva. The latest Russian landing ship sunk due to Ukrainian naval drones was the Ropucha-class landing ship Caesar Kunikov.
