Luxembourg has expressed its intention to join the international drone coalition supporting Ukraine during the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, as announced by the Latvian Ministry of Defense on 2 October 2024. Luxembourg’s Defense Minister Yuriko Backes signed a declaration in Riga, signifying the country’s desire to become part of the initiative led by Latvia and the United Kingdom.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds welcomed the potential addition, stating,
“Luxembourg’s joining the drone coalition would provide a significant contribution to the development of new drone technologies, ensuring Ukraine stays one step ahead of the aggressor.“
According to the coalition’s memorandum of understanding, the admission of new countries requires agreement from existing member states. Should Luxembourg be accepted, it would become the 17th nation in the coalition.
The drone coalition has already provided substantial support to Ukraine through drone deliveries. Since its establishment in February 2024, Latvia alone has supplied 3,000 combat drones of various types and capabilities to Ukraine. Latvia has allocated 20 million euros to the coalition’s objectives this year and provides drone testing facilities for manufacturers and armed forces to continuously improve drone technologies, as per the ministry.
Current members of the drone coalition include Latvia, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Estonia, Italy, New Zealand, Canada, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, Germany, and Sweden.
