Lithuania’s parliament has unanimously approved the redirection of fines from violations of Russian sanctions into a fund for Ukraine’s reconstruction, LRT reported.

The amendment to Lithuania’s Law on Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid passed with 99 votes in favor of the Seimas. It directs any fines or confiscated property from flouting international or Lithuanian sanctions against Russia to the development cooperation fund.

The money will go solely toward assisting the rebuilding and recovery of Ukraine after Russia’s military invasion, according to the amendment, which will be in effect for a decade until January 2034.

“The goal is for Lithuania to make a united contribution to Ukraine’s reconstruction and to demonstrate its firm commitment to support Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression,” Deputy Foreign Minister Jovita Neliupšienė said when presenting the bill to the Seimas.

She added Lithuania is proactively taking steps to aid Ukraine’s reconstruction, not waiting for EU or international decisions.

Fines for violating sanctions start at 200 euros and can reach 6,000 euros under Lithuania’s Code of Administrative Offenses.
