Japan expands sanctions over Russia’s war in Ukraine

In response to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Japan has expanded sanctions, targeting additional firms and entities, including export bans beyond Russia and its ally Belarus.

Tokyo extended its sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including 57 Russian organizations and six in nations like the United Arab Emirates, Armenia, Syria, and Uzbekistan, according to AFP. Japan’s sanctions now include 494 Russian entities, 27 Belarusian organizations, and six others globally.

Tokyo had previously frozen assets of Russian individuals and groups, and barred exports to Russia’s military-related entities, along with construction and engineering services.

The fresh sanctions will be enforced from 22 December for the newly added Russian organizations, and starting from 27 December for other entities.

During the May Group of Seven summit in Japan, the leaders of the G7 nations reached a consensus to “starve Russia of G7 technology, industrial equipment and services that support its war machine.”

Simultaneously, the United States, Britain, and the European Union have imposed extensive sanctions on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine, while also pledging substantial military aid to Kyiv.
