The Icelandic parliament has approved a resolution for long-term support to Ukraine from 2024 to 2028, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on 29 April.
According to the statement, the resolution aims to support Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, civilian safety, humanitarian aid, and reconstruction efforts.
Foreign Minister Thordis Kolbrun Reykfjord Gylfadottir submitted a proposal on 10 October 2023. Foreign Minister Bjarni Benediktsson, now the Prime Minister, submitted the resolution to parliament on 12 March 2024.
“The international legal system, on which our security and standard of living are based, is threatened by Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine. We must contribute to the defense of Ukraine in a decisive and concrete way,” said Foreign Minister Thordis Gylfadottir. “With this proposal and the corresponding commitment in the budget plan, a strong foundation is laid for our targeted support to Ukraine.”
The government of Iceland announced earlier the allocation of almost $2,1 million to the Czech initiative to purchase shells for Ukraine.
Iceland also pledged to buy equipment for servicewomen in the Ukrainian military worth $541,855.
