Greece is preparing to ship thousands of artillery ammunition from its military stockpiles to Ukraine through the Czech Republic’s initiative, a Greek outlet iEidiseis reported on 1 April.

Czechia announced on 17 February finding 800,000 rounds for Ukraine, with a potential for 1.5 million, in non-EU countries – mostly 155mm NATO caliber with some Soviet caliber. Czech President Petr Pavel said the ammunition can be sent to Ukraine in a few weeks “if funding is found quickly.”

The Greek government “is seeking the approval of the relevant parliamentary committee” to facilitate the transfer.

The ammunition reportedly is “inactive but usable.” The deal is valued at €150 million ($163 million), accoridgn to the iEidiseis.

The specific details about the types and quantities of ammunition were not disclosed.

The transfer will be facilitated by the Czech Republic, which has been actively involved in coordinating arms shipments from various countries to aid Ukraine’s military forces on the battlefield.

This development comes as Ukraine continues to urge its Western allies to provide more heavy weapons and ammunition to counter Russian artillery dominance and make further advances in regaining occupied territories.

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said on 30 March that funds are still lacking to purchase all the artillery ammunition for Ukraine under the Czech initiative.
