Finland announces new €200 million military aid package for Ukraine

Finland has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine valued at approximately €200 million, according to statements made by Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen during a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umierov in Helsinki on 13 March, according to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry.

Finland has supported Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion three years ago. In April 2024, it signed a ten-year security cooperation agreement with Ukraine, reinforcing its commitment to defense and reconstruction and establishing itself as an important international partner in military support.

This marks Finland’s 28th aid package to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began. The package still requires approval from both the Finnish government and president before implementation, Militarnyi notes.

As in the past, the content of the Finnish aid package will not be disclosed in detail, Häkkänen said during the meeting. He emphasized that Finland maintains broad political support and national unanimity regarding assistance to Ukraine.

Beyond the immediate aid package, the Finnish government has launched a €660 million program through which military equipment will be purchased directly from Finnish defense industry companies for transfer to Ukraine.

The two defense ministers also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation between their departments. This document outlines key areas for joint work, including:

  • Deepening strategic dialogue between defense agencies
  • Information exchange at strategic, operational, and tactical levels
  • Strengthening defense capabilities and interoperability
  • Developing cooperation in defense technologies, research, and innovation
  • Expanding ammunition production and defense-industrial projects in Ukraine and Finland
