Explosives in corn cans: Russia’s plot to strike Poland, Lithuania, and Germany revealed

An investigation by Poland’s ABW Internal Security Agency and prosecutors uncovered a Russian operation using corn cans filled with explosives to prepare sabotage attacks in Poland, Lithuania, and Germany. Gazeta Wyborcza and RMF24 report that the GRU courier also transported drone parts and SIM cards across borders, while ISW earlier warned Moscow and Minsk may try to blame Ukraine for future strikes.

Amid the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, Russia has also been conducting sabotage operations and military provocations against Ukraine’s closest allies, including Poland, in an effort to sow discord and undermine support for Ukraine as it defends against the Russian invasion.

Gazeta Wyborcza reports that Russian military intelligence GRU possibly prepared acts of terror using drones and corn cans packed with powerful explosives. Sources linked to Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) and the National Prosecutor’s Office said the operation covered Poland, Lithuania, and Germany and relied on canned corn disguises to hide the bombs. Security services found such cans, including at a cemetery in Lithuania, according to the newspaper.

Arrest of the suspected GRU courier moving bombs and drone parts

The publication describes the arrest of Władysław G., a suspected GRU courier accused of transporting corn cans with explosives, drone components, and SIM cards between Lithuania, Poland, and Germany.

The outlet writes that the suspect received orders to “buy a shovel, go to the cemetery, dig up the cans, and leave them near Łódź.” ABW stated that its officers constantly identify people and events that may threaten Poland’s security but did not disclose further details.

According to the paper, the suspect faces a possible life sentence, and the National Prosecutor’s Office wants to complete the investigation by the end of the year.

ISW warned of Russia’s and Belarus’ sabotage plans and false flag claims

In a 30 September report, the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) warned that Russian and Belarusian special services may carry out sabotage operations targeting critical infrastructure in Poland and send drones, while accusing Ukraine of the attacks.
