EU to continue support Moldova amid rising threat of Russian interference

The risk of Russian interference in Moldova’s internal affairs is high. It poses a real threat to the EU, which stands by the country to prevent such a scenario, said EU Spokesperson Peter Stano, according to UkrInform.

The spokesperson noted that on the political level, the bloc has begun preparing the country for future accession to the EU and is providing all necessary support for its membership.

The EU is also bolstering Moldova’s stability and resilience, both economically and in defense against direct external threats, including cyberattacks, propaganda, and disinformation from Russia. Stano said that the EU launched a partnership mission for Moldova aimed at enhancing the country’s capabilities to counter foreign influence.

“We are also helping Moldova reduce its energy dependence on supplies from Russia so that it can avoid being blackmailed when it comes to oil and gas deliveries,” the EU spokesperson added.

Moldova gained EU candidate status in 2023, and negotiations for its accession began in December. The country is scheduled to hold presidential elections and a referendum on EU membership on 20 October.

Under these circumstances, according to Moldova’s National Security Advisor Stanislav Secrieru, Russia has launched an unprecedented hybrid attack, deploying millions of euros and using thousands of social media accounts to hinder Moldova’s EU accession efforts.
