Canada pushes allies to approve Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russia with western weapons

Speaking in Montreal following the conference on Ukraine’s Peace Formula, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly expressed support for Ukraine’s use of Western long-range weapons against targets in Russia, Ukrinform reports on 1 November.

Canada currently does not provide Ukraine with long-range missiles. Ukraine first needs US approval to use ATACMS on Russian territory, which could lead to similar permissions from the UK and France for Storm Shadow/Scalp missiles. Finally, Germany may eventually transfer its Taurus missiles, and subsequently lift restrictions on strikes within Russia.

According to Ukrinform, Joly stated:

We agree with the use of long-range weapons by Ukraine on Russian targets,” she said, emphasizing that this capability was necessary for Ukraine’s self-defense.

The Foreign Minister also revealed ongoing efforts to convince other nations to adopt a similar position regarding Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Earlier, during a September phone call, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to intensify advocacy among partners for granting Ukraine permission to strike military targets in Russia.

In August, Canada reportedly authorized Ukraine to use Canadian-supplied military equipment, including tanks and armored vehicles, on Russian territory.
