Canada will provide Ukraine with more than 11,000 assault rifles and ammunition, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on 24 November during the 19th EU-Canada Summit in Canada.

Besides assault rifles for Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Canada will donate nine million rounds of ammunition manufactured by Colt Company, based in Canada’s Ontario, Justin Trudeau announced during a joint press conference with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

“At a time when many of our democratic values are under threat, it is more important than ever that we work together. A good example of that is in Ukraine. Ukraine continues to withstand Putin’s illegal and violent assault on its people, its territories, and its very freedoms,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau noted Ukraine continues to need steady support to defend itself against ongoing Russia’s aggression.

Canada has been a long-term supporter of Ukraine as the country continues to fight off the Russian aggression. Canada plans to allocate more than $940 billion in aid for Ukraine until 2026, according to the 2023 Fall Economic Statement. The Canadian government will send over $595 million to Ukraine in 2023-2024, $232 million in 2024-2025, and $143 million in 2025-2026.
