On 26 February, Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov arrived in Kyiv, where he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting that underscored the importance of regional security, economic cooperation, and a united stand against the threats posed by Russia’s actions.
Zelenskyy highlighted the critical situation in the Black Sea region, exacerbated by Russia’s occupation of Crimea. He assured that efforts are underway to restore security and thanked Bulgaria for its support in ensuring safe navigation and trade flows in the Black Sea and the Danube region. The leaders agreed to enhance logistics and infrastructure development, which is expected to foster economic growth for both nations.
“We have agreed with Bulgaria to step up the development of logistics and infrastructure in our region. Our mutual respect for the principle of good neighborliness will contribute to the economic growth of both our countries,” the Zelenskyy said.
The talks also covered cooperation in energy and defense production, with Ukraine expressing a keen interest in joint arms production. Zelenskyy emphasized the pragmatic interaction between the two countries, especially in political matters and the pursuit of justice. He praised Bulgaria’s efforts in applying pressure on Russia through sanctions and its readiness to assist in holding Russia accountable for its war crimes.
Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Denkov reiterated his country’s support for Ukraine, stating that Russia’s aggression is not only a threat to Ukraine but to Europe and the democratic world as a whole. He announced Bulgaria’s readiness to participate in the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children and stressed the importance of an international tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
The meeting also touched upon the Ukrainian Peace Formula, with Zelenskyy seeking Bulgaria’s active role in the upcoming Global Peace Summit.
