NextImg:Weekend Media Wrap, Vol. 14: What You Missed If You Weren’t Glued To The Sunday Shows

Every Sunday morning, legacy media outlets are taken over by elected officials, aspiring elected officials, administration insiders, and the usual collection of talking heads — all of whom are there to discuss specific policies, push talking points, or simply promote their own campaigns.

For those who don’t spend their Sunday mornings glued to the television — and their Sunday afternoons attempting to unravel a full week’s worth of network and cable news media spin — The Daily Wire has compiled a short summary of what you may have missed.

ABC News, “This Week”:

Much of the focus on Sunday remained on Israel and the response to the October 7th terror attacks — perpetrated by Hamas — that resulted in over 1,400 killed, many of them civilians. GOP presidential hopeful and sitting Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) addressed the topic with host Jon Karl on ABC’s “This Week.”

Referencing President Joe Biden’s recent remarks on the war — and his subsequent request for billions more in aid dollars heading to Ukraine — Scott insinuated that Biden was using the war in Israel as leverage to push Congress into continued funding for Ukraine.

“I believe that leveraging the challenges in the war with Israel to get more assistance for Ukraine at that level of $60 billion is too much,” Scott said.

Scott went on to say that the United States needed to be absolutely clear in warning the hostile actors — particularly Iran, which is believed to be complicit in Hamas’ brutal attacks on Israeli civilians — that continued actions against U.S. allies would be met with a stern response.

“We need to send the clearest message that if we see the death of more Americans, that that is on the shoulders, frankly, and in the hands of Iran,” Scott said, responding to reports that more U.S. troops — and at least one additional aircraft carrier — were being sent to the region.

House Foreign Affairs Committee chair Michael McCaul also joined Karl for Sunday morning’s broadcast, and he talked about the multiple threats that still face Israel — from terrorist groups in both Gaza (Hamas) and Lebanon (Hezbollah).

Both groups, McCaul said, would only respond to strength: “Hamas and Hezbollah only see one thing, and that’s power. If we project power and deterrence, they will back down. If they see weakness, they will fire.”

CBS News, “Face the Nation”:

Former House Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) joined host Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation” to discuss the chaotic battle to replace ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and she placed the blame for the situation squarely on McCarthy’s shoulders.

Cheney said that McCarthy’s willingness to embrace former President Donald Trump — along with the “most radical and extreme members” within the party had directly led to the problems currently keeping the House at a standstill. “It’s important somebody not be an election denier,” she warned of whoever might take up the gavel next.

Phillippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of the United Nations’ Agency for Palestinian refugees joined CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday, where he spoke with host Margaret Brennan about the dire situation face by the civilians who remained in Gaza — many of whom have been forced by Hamas terrorists to remain despite the horrible conditions and the immediate threat of a likely ground invasion.

Gaza, Lazzarini said, would likely run out of fuel entirely in just a few days. “No fuel, no water, no bakery, no running hospital,” he said, adding that the lack of fuel meant that humanitarian efforts could not proceed. “We need fuel to move the trucks to reach the people in need.”

CNN, “State of the Union”:

Cheney also made a Sunday morning appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” where she told anchor Jake Tapper that she had not ruled out a presidential bid in 2024.

“We’re going to see what happens. We’re going to see how things unfold,” Cheney told Tapper, saying that she would “imagine that there will be a number of other candidates in the race.”

NBC News, “Meet the Press”:

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy joined NBC’s broadcast of “Meet the Press,” where he told new anchor Kristen Welker that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) — who led the charge to strip him of the Speaker’s gavel — was responsible to the House’s inability to settle on new leadership.

“This is embarrassing for the Republican Party,” McCarthy said, referencing the House’s failure to elect a new Speaker despite nominating first House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and then Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH). “It’s embarrassing for the nation.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken also joined “Meet the Press” to discuss the ongoing hostage situation in Gaza, noting that he was of course relieved to see Hamas release two American hostages, but that he was wary of taking promises from the terrorist group seriously.

“Acts are what speak, not words, particularly coming from Hamas,” Blinken said of Hamas’ reported pledge to release two more American hostages in the near future.

FOX, “Fox News Sunday”:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) joined anchor Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday” to discuss the race to fill the now-vacant House Speaker’s position.

Gingrich, who led the House from 1995-1999, said that the level of disarray among Republicans might be best served with a female candidate — in part, because he believed a woman might be better able to corral the “rowdiness.”

“They need to pick somebody to get stability. I frankly wish that they … had a woman candidate out of all the candidates they’ve got running. You know, somebody like Elise Stefanik or Beth Van Duyne. I think, in some ways, given the level of rowdiness and the level of juvenile behavior, it’s conceivable that a female speaker would be more effective in actually getting them all to get together and stick together,” he said.

MSNBC, “Inside With Jen Psaki”:

Special Envoy David Satterfield sat down with former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Sunday, focusing his attention on the civilians who were likely to get caught in the middle of anything that happened in Gaza in the coming days.

Noting the civilians did not appear able to get out of the war-torn region, Psaki asked Satterfield to explain who was preventing them from getting to safety.

“The answer is very simple. It is Hamas. Full stop,” Satterfield said.

Satterfield went on to say that Egypt would not accept refugees from Gaza, arguing that the best solution would be to make Gaza a safe place rather than to just provide safe refuge for those fleeing the area.

“The people of Gaza need to be able to live secure lives in Gaza,” he said. And that requires an end to Hamas’ ability to govern, to exploit, and to dominate with terror.”
