President Donald Trump on Thursday confirmed that tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico will indeed be implemented on March 4, as well as hitting China with an additional 10% tariff.
“Drugs are still pouring into our Country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “A large percentage of these Drugs, much of them in the form of Fentanyl, are made in, and supplied by, China. More than 100,000 people died last year due to the distribution of these dangerous and highly addictive POISONS. Millions of people have died over the last two decades. The families of the victims are devastated and, in many instances, virtually destroyed. We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled. China will likewise be charged an additional 10% Tariff on that date. The April Second Reciprocal Tariff date will remain in full force and effect.”
In early February, Trump warned that he would impose tariffs on products imported from Canada, China, and Mexico. But he temporarily halted the tariffs on Mexico and Canada after they responded with measures dealing with illegal immigration and the flow of drugs across the American border. He did levy a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports that went into effect on February 4, prompting China to respond by imposing a 15% tax on American exports to China.
Trump’s post was an apparent attempt to clarify his position. In addition to the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, reciprocal tariffs will take effect April 2, according to CNN.
The White House statement on February 1 declared, “The extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, constitutes a national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Until the crisis is alleviated, President Donald J. Trump is implementing a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% additional tariff on imports from China. Energy resources from Canada will have a lower 10% tariff.”
