“The Crow” original director Alex Proyas slammed the idea of a reboot of the 1994 cult classic and said “it’s not just a movie,” but the legacy of Brandon Lee who died while filming.

In a post on Facebook, Proyas, who was the original filmmaker behind the dark thriller, reacted to news that the upcoming reboot of his film is set to hit theaters this year, the Hollywood Reporter reported. His post included a Comic Book Resource article stating that the reboot trailer had gotten numerous dislikes on YouTube.

“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work,” Proyas wrote. “And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film.”

“So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fans’ response speaks volumes,” he added.

“THE CROW is not just a movie,” the director continued. “Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.”

In 1993, the son of the famed martial arts star Bruce Lee, was killed on set in a prop gun accident at the age of 28. In the film, Lee played the role of “a man brutally murdered” who “comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder.”

In 2017, Proyas opened up about why he had ultimately decided to finish the film, and said it was in Brandon’s honor.

“I finished the film for Brandon – struggling through grief, along with the hugely supportive cast & crew who all loved Brandon, to complete it in his absence,” Proyas said at the time.

“We were imbued with the strength of Brandon’s spirit and his inspiration,” he added. “Not only Brandon’s wonderful work as an actor and a film-maker, but as a man, whose humanity had touched us.”

Directed by Rupert Sanders, the new version of “The Crow” is what happens after “soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are brutally murdered. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek revenge, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”

Rupert recently talked about his version of “The Crow” and said he hopes his film will serve as a tribute to Lee.

“Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with ‘The Crow’ and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again,: Sanders told Vanity Fair. “His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.”

The trailer for the new film can be seen here. “The Crow” reboot is set to hit theaters June 7.
