Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, a vehement Donald Trump critic, changed the lyrics to one of the band’s most popular songs to take a shot at the former president and his supporters during a New Year’s Eve performance.

While performing the band’s 2004 hit song “American Idiot” Sunday night in Hollywood, Armstrong sang, “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda” instead of the original lyrics, “I’m not a part of the redneck agenda.” The performance was broadcast on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” on ABC, which was hosted by Ryan Seacrest, who also interviewed President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden on the network’s special coverage of the New Year’s Eve festivities.

“American Idiot” was released during America’s war against Iraq following the 9/11 terror attacks and was a clear statement against then-President George W. Bush and the war, Business Insider reported. Armstrong has previously shared his strong feelings on Trump, telling concertgoers in 2018, “I f***ing hate Donald Trump so much.”

“I used to scream I hated George Bush. This one is a little different,” he added, as reported by Variety. “This one is bad, it’s like acid gone bad. F***ing LSD and the American Right, man.”

Shortly after Trump burst onto the political scene and became the Republican presidential nominee in 2016, the Green Day rocker compared the GOP leader to Hitler, telling Kerrang! Magazine, “The worst problem I see about Trump is who his followers are. I actually feel bad for them, because they’re poor, working-class people who can’t get a leg up. They’re pissed off and he’s preyed on their anger.”

“He just said, ‘You have no options, and I’m going to take care of it myself.’ I mean, that’s f–king Hitler, man! I don’t even know how else to explain it. I wish I were over-exaggerating. And sometimes maybe I do over-exaggerate with Bush. But with Trump, I just can’t wait ’til he’s gone,” Armstrong said.

On ABC’s New Year’s Eve broadcast, Biden appeared in a pretaped interview where he chatted with Seacrest and touted the job he’s done as president.

“I hope that [people] understand that we’re in a better position than any country in the world to lead the world,” Biden said. “And we’re coming back, and it’s about time.”

“I just feel good, the American people got up. They’ve been through a rough time with the pandemic, but now we’re coming back, they’re back,” the president added.
