The U.S. Olympic team charged back over the weekend after it was far behind China and is now within striking distance of the communist country’s gold medal count. Team USA is also dominating in total medals as the Paris Games moves into day 10.

China leads in gold medals with 21 while the U.S. sits at 19, and Australia holds 13. In total medals, the U.S. is the clear leader with 75, China is in second with 52, and France is in third with 45, according to the latest official count.

Here are the latest updates to Team USA’s hunt for gold:

U.S. Wins 5 Golds on Sunday

Team USA secured gold medals in track and field, swimming, golf, and road cycling on Sunday, inching closer to China’s tally.

Noah Lyles Takes Gold in Photo Finish to 100M

On Sunday, American track star Noah Lyles won the 100-meter final by five-thousandths of a second over Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson. Lyles also set a personal record in the race, crossing the finish line in 9.79 seconds. The victory secured America’s first gold medal in the 100-meter dash since 2004.

U.S. Swimming Snatches More Gold

Long-distance freestyler Bobby Finke won gold in the 1500-meter freestyle and a set new world record of 14:30.67. Meanwhile, Team USA’s women’s medley relay team — Regan Smith (backstroke), Lilly King (breaststroke), Gretchen Walsh (butterfly), and Torri Huske (freestyle) — took the gold by a decisive margin and set another world record in the process.

Team USA’s men’s 4×100 medley relay team took the silver medal after being upset by China. This year’s games marks the only time other than the 1980 boycott of the Moscow Olympics that a U.S. men’s team has not taken the gold in the 4×100 medley relay.

Scottie Scheffler Secures Gold For Team USA in Golf

The no. 1 golfer in the world Scottie Scheffler won his first gold medal on Sunday after an incredible comeback victory. Scheffler trailed fellow American Xander Schauffele and Spain’s Jon Rahm by four strokes entering the final round but shot an impressive 62 on the last 18 holes. Scheffler’s comeback was vital for securing gold for the U.S. in golf as Schauffele fell out of the top three spots. Tommy Fleetwood of England won silver and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama took bronze.

This article will be updated as the medal count changes.
