Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace President Joe Biden atop the Democratic Party ticket on Monday, becoming the latest Democrat to get in line behind Harris’ presidential bid.

“Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” Pelosi said. “My enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris for President is official, personal and political.”

Biden threw his support behind Harris to become the Democrats’ nominee after announcing that he was ending his re-election campaign on Sunday. Along with Pelosi, Harris also boasts the endorsements of Bill and Hillary Clinton, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, multiple Democratic senators — including Patty Murray (D-WA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) — and influential congressman, James Clyburn (D-SC).

Former President Barack Obama has yet to endorse Harris for president despite penning a lengthy statement on Biden’s decision to step aside from the race. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) have also not endorsed Harris as of Monday afternoon.

Pelosi’s endorsement comes after former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told Fox News that “a couple” of House Democrats told him that “behind the scenes, Nancy Pelosi says Kamala Harris would do worse than Biden.”

“They may be pushing her out at the very beginning to see if she collapses really soon and then bring another Democrat up,” McCarthy said.

Polling from before Biden announced he would end his campaign shows Trump leading Harris in a hypothetical matchup by nearly two points nationally, numbers that are similar to Trump’s lead over Biden, according to the RealClearPolitics average.
