NextImg:Joy Behar: Democracy Suddenly Stopped ‘Working’ When Trump Took Office

Joy Behar claimed on Friday that democracy had simply stopped “working” when President Donald Trump took office after winning the 2024 presidential election.

Citing a poll that said a majority of Americans believed democracy “wasn’t working,” Behar insisted that everything had been fine when former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden had been in the Oval Office, and that everything had obviously gone sideways because of Trump.

“So if you’re worried about where the country is heading, you’re not alone,” Behar began. “Seventy-nine percent of American voters think that the U.S. is in a state of political crisis, and more than half think democracy isn’t working.”

“It’s funny, under Obama and Biden it was working. All of a sudden it’s not working. Gee, what happened?!” she asked.

Cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin pushed back, saying she didn’t think that was what the poll was really saying.

“I know but I’m saying it! I’m saying that!” Behar protested.

Cohost Ana Navarro claimed that Trump had only gotten reelected in 2024 because he’d been out of office for four years, and in that time, people “had forgotten how bad Trump was. I think it meant a lot to people in 2020 when Joe Biden was first running because we were just surviving that first Trump term.”

“I think if someone was running now against Trump when people have been painfully reminded of what an authoritarian he is, it would be very different,” she claimed, arguing that the entire system of checks and balances had also stopped working — and that the American people were starting to see that. She voiced her disappointment in the fact that the federal district courts issuing orders against Trump did not “have the teeth” to more effectively enforce those rulings.
