Major players in the conservative movement are weighing in on the Democrats’ “ransom” demands to end the government shutdown, which is poised to affect millions of Americans in the coming days.
At the stroke of midnight, the government entered a shutdown after 43 Senate Democrats refused to vote for a stopgap spending measure—a continuing resolution—strikingly similar to about a dozen continuing resolutions both Republicans and Democrats have supported in recent years.
“Democrats are taking the people’s government ransom, demanding a price we can’t afford,” said Tiffany Justice, the executive vice president of Heritage Action for America, one of the largest conservative grassroots organizations in the United States with 2.5 million activists, in a statement. “They want $1.5 trillion for extra spending, Green New Deal scams, and even more benefits for illegal aliens—but we won’t bow to radical activists cosplaying as lawmakers.”
During this particular shutdown, nonessential federal workers will be furloughed, and members of the U.S. military will be required to work without pay until federal funding of the government has been reestablished.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee was quick to make note of this fact: “Senate Democrats just forced our troops to go without pay,” the NRSC wrote on social media.
Heritage Action’s Justice also highlighted what she said was Democrat hypocrisy when it came to failing to support a continuing resolution to fund the government. “Yesterday, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries picked a political stunt over the American people—throwing a temper tantrum to appease their far-left base,” she claimed. “Shutdown Schumer’s hypocrisy was on full display as he rejected the same deal he supported just months ago and blocked a clean CR, a move he previously called ‘reckless partisan posturing.’”
Schumer is the Senate minority leader; Jeffries is the House minority leader. Both are New York Democrats.
The SBA Pro-Life America, which works to eliminate abortion through pro-life legislation, contended that Democrats were seeking to get taxpayer support for the procedure.
“Democrats are shutting down the government to try to expand forced taxpayer funding of abortion on demand in Obamacare subsidies,” the organization posted on the social media platform X while thanking the president and Republicans in Congress for standing for life.
Terry Schilling, the president of the American Principles Project, which focuses on restoring the American family, took aim at congressional Democrats for prioritizing woke policies over the American family.
“Now that [President Donald Trump] has cut all of their waste, the abortion funding, the taxpayer-funded sex-change procedures, the left-wing propaganda like PBS and NPR, they’re suddenly ready to hold America hostage. They don’t care if you suffer. They only care if PBS loses a check, and that tells you everything you need to know,” Schilling said in an address posted on X.
Meanwhile, Republican former Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who chairs the America First Policy Institute’s Governors’ Council, urged Congress in a letter with other current and former governors yesterday to avoid the shutdown in part because of its cultural impact.
“A clean, short-term extension is the only path forward. It protects our service members and veterans, ensures continuity for essential programs, and prevents unnecessary disruption to our state’s economies and communities. Shutting down the government weakens America and undermines trust in our institutions,” the letter states.
For Justice and other conservative leaders, the Democrats’ move amounts to undermining democracy because it undercuts the will of the American voters who made their preferences known in 2024.
“The American people gave President Trump a mandate to save our country from the washed-up Washington Democrats intent on destroying it,” Justice said. “They may not think voters can see through their performance, but Americans are smarter than Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries.”
