Members of Congress are sounding off about the Democrat refusal yesterday to come to a deal in the White House to keep the government open, highlighting how Republican leadership would like to keep the government open.
Without a deal, the federal government faces a possible shutdown at midnight.
“The facts after the White House meeting remain the same: Republicans already voted to keep the government open while Democrats refuse to do their job. Instead of playing political games, Democrats need to pass the clean House bill,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., told The Daily Signal.
Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., emphasized to The Daily Signal that the House of Representatives had accomplished its goal of passing legislation to temporarily fund the government.
“House Republicans have done our job to keep the government open. We passed a clean continuing resolution that gives Congress time to pass our funding bills in regular order,” Guest stated.
“Democrats want to fund health care for illegal aliens with your hard-earned money instead of working with House Republicans to keep the government operational. This continuing resolution is the same short-term funding extension that Democrats agreed to earlier this year. The Senate should do its job and pass the continuing resolution approved by the House and President Trump,” the Mississippi congressman continued.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told Fox News host Bret Baier yesterday that the refusal by Democrats to play ball had to do with President Donald Trump.
“Schumer is running scared from his political left. I mean, it’s that simple. And again, this is all about who’s in the White House. [Democrats] did this 13 times when Biden was in the White House,” Thune said.
“There is no reason for a government shutdown. Republicans are united—House Republicans, Senate Republicans, the president of the United States all agree to keep the government open. All it takes is Chuck Schumer to agree to put the bill that’s sitting at the Senate desk. The House has passed it. We can pass it. President signs it into law. Government stays open,” Thune continued.
Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., attributed the opposition to funding the government to the Democrats’ left-wing base.
“Democrats are voting to shut down the government and it’s nothing but a giant political stunt. They had no problems passing clean CRs when Biden was President. Many of them voted for this same CR just a few months ago. What changed is they now have a radical leftist base demanding they do anything to obstruct President Trump’s success—even if it means our troops going without pay,” the West Virginia congressman said in a statement on X.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, predicted that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., would be to blame for failing to fund the government.
“He’s willing to impose the very costs that he warned about on the American people & on our seniors to score political points with his progressive, radical base. If the Democrats do not relent in this partisan posturing, the result will be forever known as the #SchumerShutdown.” Cornyn wrote on X.
