NextImg:EXCLUSIVE: Congresswoman Asks Ed Department to Investigate Show on 'Non-Monosexual Identity' at Son's High School

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, asked the Department of Education to investigate her son’s high school in Marion, Iowa, for broadcasting a student-hosted show discussing “non-monosexual identity.”

Linn-Mar High School broadcast a show celebrating “bisexual-plus awareness week” and defining “non-monosexual identity.”

“This term encompasses a range of identities, including bisexual, pansexual, fluid, queer, and omnisexual,” the student broadcasters said. “Non-monosexual identities emphasize that attraction can be complex and not limited to traditional binaries.”

In a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Hinson urged the Department of Education to launch a full investigation into the high school to ensure “parents are making decisions about their children’s education and how to address matters of sexual identity.”

The show, which features high school students as reporters, devoted a segment of each episode over the past week to discussions on bisexuality, including an episode Thursday on being “non-monosexual” and “omnisexual.”

Linn-Mar Spectrum, the school’s “student-led Gay-Straight Alliance” that has existed at the school for over 17 years, produced the segments.

In an episode Friday, the show stated the segments were meant to “address issues such as biphobia and discrimination,” adding that its creators hoped “this week has encouraged discussion either in class or among friends on how to be supportive.”

“This week is celebrated to remind people that bisexuality is valid and recognized as a sexual orientation,” the segment concluded. “Love has no boundaries.”

Previous episodes from this week’s show featured discussions on how to be an “ally” to bisexual people, including recommendations for students and staff to display the bisexual pride flag, advocate for pro-bisexual legislation, provide resources to bisexual students, and use “inclusive” terms like “bisexual-plus.”

In the letter, Hinson said she was appalled the segments were broadcast to students without parental consent. Linn-Marr Community School District did not immediately respond to The Daily Signal’s request for comment.

“These segments were broadcast to students without parental knowledge or consent,” Hinson wrote. “As a parent and a legislator, I am appalled that a school would assume the role of teaching and promoting sexual identity to our children. Our schools should be educating students, not indoctrinating them.”

The show has been part of Linn-Mar High School since 2003, and it is described as an “extracurricular activity open to all high school students.”

“This is not the first time that Linn-Mar Community School District has deliberately excluded
parents from conversations that rightfully belong between a parent and child,” Hinson wrote. “Families—not school administrators—should decide how and when to address these issues. These conversations should be between parents and their children—not force-fed to students as part of daily morning announcements in our public-school systems.”

Linn-Mar High School is part of the Linn-Mar Community School District, a district that was revealed in 2022 to have adopted a “social transition” plan allowing kids seventh grade and up to identify as another sex at school without parental consent or notification.

That policy led Parents Defending Education to file a lawsuit against the school district, and in 2023, the federal 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the district’s parental exclusion policies were unlawful.

Hinson said she appreciates the Trump administration’s commitment to restoring parents’ voices in their
children’s education.

“This indoctrination—without even giving parents an opportunity to opt out—is exactly the kind of abuse we must end,” she wrote. “Exposing children to ideology that may conflict with a family’s values or faith, or that parents are not ready to address with their children, is wholly unacceptable.”

“Parents should be informed, empowered, and involved in all aspects of their children’s education,
not blindsided after their children have been exposed to inappropriate content,” she continued. “Let me be clear: There is no circumstance where it is acceptable for administrators, teachers, or any school employee to discuss sexuality with a student without explicit parental consent.”
