NextImg:WH: Interior Department Will Make a Decision the Willow Project

(CNSNews.com) - The White House said Monday that the Interior Department will make the decision on whether to approve the largest oil and gas drilling project in America known as the Willow Project.

“I have a question on the Willow Project in Alaska. What’s more important to President Biden - improving energy security or reducing fossil fuels?” Fox News White House Correspondent Peter Doocy asked.

“So first of all, it doesn’t have to be one or the other. We can try to do both,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

“He said in 2019, I guarantee you we’re going to end fossil fuels, so this project would just be dead, right?” Doocy asked.

“So here’s what I can say about that. The president did meet with the Alaska delegation last week at the White House. He always appreciates speaking and meeting with the full delegation, understand what their concerns are,” Jean-Pierre said.

“So I’ll leave it there, and when it comes to that specific decision, that’s something that the secretary of the interior’s going to make, so I’m not going to get ahead of where she’s going to be, but the president has met with the delegation. I’m just going to leave it there,” she said.

The Bureau of Land Management recently narrowed the scope of the project to three out of the five requested drilling pads requested by ConocoPhillips.

However, the environmentalist group the Sierra Club opposes the project, saying it will have “a devastating effect on public lands and our climate, and approving it after passing the largest climate bill in history would be a giant step in reverse."
