Voters overwhelming think media bias is getting worse, not better, but Democrat voters and Biden supporters are much more satisfied with the objectivity of journalism today than the average, a new Rasmussen poll reveals.
A national survey of U.S. likely Voters, conducted June 25-27, 2024, asked if “the problem of bias in the news media” is getting better, getting worse or staying about the same as usual. Nearly seven times as many voters said media bias is getting worse (61%) as said it’s getting better (9%). Another 27% said it’s about the same as usual.
The more pleased voters are with Pres. Joe Biden, the less likely they are to think there’s a growing problem of media bias. Just 36% of those who strongly approve of his job performance say media bias is becoming more severe, compared to 82% of voters who strongly disapprove.
Republican voters are more likely to think media bias is worsening, as opposed to improving (71%-9%) than are Democrat voters (45%-14%). Among unaffiliated voters, 67% say media bias is getting worse, while just four percent think the situation is improving.
Likewise, of those who say the country is “heading in the right direction,” 36% say media bias is getting worse and 23% think it’s getting better, while 76% of those who think America’s heading the wrong way say media bias is getting worse and just two percent think it’s improving.
Voters’ belief that media bias is worsening also appears to be tied to which news organization they consider to be the most trustworthy, with those who most trust cable news being more likely to think media bias is getting worse than those who rely on broadcast news networks for honest reporting:
