Five days after Pres. Biden called for a “bullseye” to be put on former Pres. Donald Trump, a shooter tried to assassinate Biden’s 2024 Republican challenger for the presidency.

On Monday, July 8, Biden told a group of donors that it was time to “stop talking” and put his opponent in a “bullseye,” according to a recording obtained by Politico:

“‘We need to move forward. Look, we have roughly 40 days til the convention, 120 days til the election. We can’t waste any more time being distracted,’ Biden said in a private call with donors Monday, according to a recording obtained by POLITICO.

“‘I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump. I’m absolutely certain I’m the best person to be able to do that. So, we’re done talking about the debate, it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye,’ Biden said.”

At a Trump rally the following Saturday, a shooter identified as Thomas Crooks attempted to assassinate the former president, firing shots from atop a nearby building, grazing Trump, killing one attendee and critically wounding two others.

Top Democrats have repeatedly referred to Trump as Hitler, a dictator, and an existential threat to democracy in the months leading up to Saturday’s assassination attempt.
