“This is deranged,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) responded Sunday, after President Joe Biden claimed that Republicans want to “slash” border security funding and open the floodgates for fentanyl to enter the U.S.
Biden made the claim Saturday in a tweet, in which he suggested border security should be increased:
“MAGA House Republican proposals would slash funding for border security – a move that could allow nearly 900 pounds of fentanyl into our country.
“We need more resources to secure the border. Not less.”
Cruz replied with a tweet blasting Biden for the egregious dishonesty of his unhinged claim and pointing out the disastrous effects of Biden’s open border policies:
“This is deranged.
“Pathological dishonesty.
“No President in history has opened our border with such lawless abandon.
“5.5 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS under Biden.”
Likewise, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) replied to Biden, calling his claim "a total fabrication.” “In your 2024 budget proposal, you call for billion-dollar cuts to border security operations and ICE,” Biggs added.
Biden appears to be basing Saturday’s Twitter claim on one he made in a statement released last Monday, in which claimed that the Republican House Freedom Caucus wants to “eliminate funding for more than 2,000 Customs and Border Protection agents and officers”:
“The extreme MAGA Republican House Freedom Caucus proposal would eliminate funding for more than 2,000 Customs and Border Protection agents and officers and severely undermine our ability to secure the border and combat drug trafficking—allowing an additional 150,000 pounds of cocaine, nearly 900 pounds of fentanyl, nearly 2,000 pounds of heroin, and more than 17,000 pounds of methamphetamine into our country.”
A Newsweek fact-check, published the next day, rates Biden’s claim “False” and notes that the House Freedom Caucus wants no such cut.
What’s more, House Republicans have not yet released a budget proposal.
