“About time this ends,” Media Research Center President Brent Bozell wrote Monday, applauding the breaking news that House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has proposed defunding the efforts of politically-motivated prosecutions, like those targeting former president and current GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“#BREAKING: @Jim_Jordan submits legislative proposals to DEFUND lawfare by Jack Smith, Fani Willis, Alvin Bragg, and Letitia James,” the House Judiciary GOP announced on social media.

“The Committee on the Judiciary and its Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government continue to conduct vigorous oversight over the Biden Administration in an effort to protect Americans’ fundamental freedoms,” Chairman Jordan’s letter begins, introducing a series of recommend reforms for inclusion in the fiscal year 2025 appropriations.

Under “Withholding or Limiting the Use of Grant Funds,” Jordan recommends the prohibition of funds from being used to prosecute any former or current president or vice president:

“Sec. ____. PROHIBITION ON USE OF FUNDS.—None of the funds made available by this Act or any other Act for any grant program carried out by the Department of Justice may be used to fund a criminal prosecution against a former or current President or Vice President. This prohibition on the use of funds shall also apply to the use of funds to consult, advise, or direct state prosecutors and state attorneys general engaged in a civil action or a criminal prosecution of a former or current President or Vice President. This prohibition on the use of funds shall also apply to funds received and reallocated by any state or local jurisdiction.”

Likewise, Chairman Jordan requests a prohibition of the use of funds for a Special Counsel, who is not Senate-confirmed, to go after a former or current president or vice president:

“PROHIBITION ON USE OF FUNDS.—None of the funds made available by this Act or any other Act shall be used, or transferred to another Federal agency, board, or commission to be used, to appoint or fund the office of a Special Counsel, who has not been confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as a U.S. Attorney, to bring a criminal prosecution of a former or current President or Vice President.”

“We have conducted oversight of the troubling rise in politicized prosecutions and the use of abusive ‘lawfare’ tactics to target political opponents,” Chairman Jordan reports:

“We have seen rogue prosecutors abuse the rules of professional conduct and their duty to do justice in service of politicized ends.

“We recommend that the Appropriations Committee, with appropriate consultation from leadership, include language to eliminate federal funding for state prosecutors or state attorneys general involved in lawfare and to zero out federal funding for federal prosecutors engaged in such abuse.”

“Reining in abusive federal law enforcement agencies” is vitally important to the protection of Americans’ civil rights, given recent testimony alleging FBI abuses, the letter says:

“The Committee and Select Subcommittee have received testimony about egregious abuses, misallocation of federal law-enforcement resources, and misconduct within the leadership ranks of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).”
