"Were you guessing or lying when you said you didn't turn down requests from President Trump's (security) detail?" Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) asked Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday.
Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight Committee to answer questions about the spectacular security failure that allowed former President Donald Trump to be shot at a campaign rally.
Since Trump was shot on July 13, Cheatle’s office first called claims that the Secret Service denied requests for additional security “absolutely false” and “unequivocally false” – then later said that some requests were denied.
When Jordan asked Cheatle if she was "guessing or lying” when she claimed requests for security were denied, she answered “Neither.”
Cheatle refused to answer when Jordan asked her how many times she denied the Trump campaign’s requests for additional help and to identify the types of requests that were turned down. She also refused to reconcile the stark difference between her claims and those of her spokesman.
“He said they were denied certain requests, some requests. This is your spokesperson, not me talking, this is the Secret Service talking. When did it change?” Jordan asked, to no avail.
“It looks like you won’t answer some pretty basic questions,” Rep. Jordan noted, calling out Dir. Cheatle for “cutting corners” when it came to protecting Trump:
“You got a nine percent raise and it looks like you cut corners when it came to protecting one of the most important individuals, one of the most well-known individuals on the planet, a former president, likely the guy who’s going to be the next president. Looks like you guys were cutting corners.”
