NextImg:Prison Wouldn’t Disqualify Trump from Presidency; We’re ‘Entering Banana Republic Land’: Alan Dershowitz

“When you start indicting people who are running for president…you’re entering Banana Republic Land” – and former President Donald Trump can be president even if he’s in prison – famed liberal attorney Alan Dershowitz says.

On Thursday, the news broke that Trump had been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury. But, in a video commentary on “The Dershow” earlier this month, constitutional scholar and Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Dershowitz explained the dangers of the politically-motivated indictment.

If incumbent politicians can have their opponents indicted and jailed, it will turn the U.S. into a banana republic and “become the newest way of trying to win an election,” Dershowitz warned:

“When you start indicting people who are running for president – forget about the past – people who are trying to unseat the incumbent president, you’re entering Banana Republic Land.

“That’s what they do in banana republics in some parts of South America, where one of the dictators said: ‘For my friends, everything. For my enemies: the law!’ That’s what they’re doing. They’re trying to use the law to prevent Donald Trump from successfully running for president.”

….

“It will hurt the rule of law. It will hurt precedent. It will mean that every time somebody is running for election, whether it’s for D.A. or for president, his opponent, if they’re the incumbent, will find crimes against him. It will become the newest way of trying to win an election.”

“Well, I have some bad news for you guys,” even prison wouldn’t disqualify Trump from becoming the country’s Commander in Chief again, Dershowitz told DA Bragg and his cohorts trying to keep the former president from out of office:

“He can run for president if he’s indicted, if he’s convicted, if he’s sentenced – and if he’s in prison!”

What’s more, a Trump indictment will further divide Americans, and that’s the last thing the country needs, Dershowitz concluded.
