NextImg:Poll: More People in Germany, Spain, Italy Say End the War, Let Russia Control Ukraine Territory

(CNSNews.com) -- A recent poll conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) revealed that in 5 of the 10 nations surveyed, more people want the conflict between Ukraine and Russia "to stop as soon as possible, even if it means Ukraine giving control of areas to Russia."

However, in the other 5 nations, more people say "Ukraine needs to regain all its territory, even if it means a longer war or more Ukrainians being killed and diplaced."

For the survey, the ECFR polled adults (aged 18 and over) in Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Spain. The total number of respondents was 14,439.

The ECFR asked people to say which statement best reflected their view of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The first statement was, "The conflict between Russia and Ukraine needs to stop as soon as possible, even if it means Ukraine giving control of areas to Russia."

The second statement was, "Ukraine needs to regain all its territory, even if it means a longer war or more Ukrainians being killed and dispalced."

In response, 39% of Germans agreed with the first statement and 33% agreed with the second statement. In Spain, 30% backed the first statement and 29% backed the second statement.

In Italy, the breakdown was 41% (end war) and 26% (keep fighting). In Portugal, the split was 33% to 28% in favor of ending the war as soon as possible. Romania agreed, with a 37% to 22% split.

On the other side -- more people wanting Ukraine to regain all its territory even if it means a longer war -- the percentages were:

France, 35% to 31%

Britain, 44% to 22%

Poland, 52% to 18%

Denmark, 48% to 24%

Estonia, 66% to 17%

Commenting on its poll's findings, the ECFR said it "suggests that Europeans have come closer together in their support for Ukraine," but "these factors are fragile and European leaders should be careful in their optimism."

As for the U.S., the group said "maybe the biggest danger to this unity is a change in Washington. Biden has been almost as important to building European unity from a positive direction as Putin has been from a negative one. If Donald Trump – or another America First Republican – returns to the White House in 2024, U.S. support for Ukraine and unity with Europe will look much less certain. Any change in American politics would leave European unity particularly vulnerable."
