(CNSNews.com) - Former President Donald Trump was reportedly indicted Thursday for making hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election.
The actual charges remain unclear, and the indictment remains under seal, but Trump is expected to be arraigned next week in Manhattan.
This makes Trump the first president to be charged in a criminal matter.
Trump reacted to news of the indictment, by accusing Democrats of “weaponizing our justice system to punish a political opponent.”
“This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history,” Trump said in a statement. “From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats – the enemy of the hard-working men and women of this Country – have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement.”
“The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to ‘Get Trump,’ but now they’ve done the unthinkable – indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant Election Interference,” he added.
His attorney Alina Habba said the former president “is a victim of a corrupt and distorted version of the American justice system and history," and she predicted that Trump will be vindicated.
