NextImg:McCarthy: Republicans Are Focused on the Issues, Not Trump

(CNSNews.com) - Republicans at their ongoing retreat in Orlando, Florida are not focused on Donald Trump's legal perils, even though that's what reporters keep asking about, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told a news conference Tuesday morning.

"No, we're not talking about this in our conference. You're just asking about it. So it only dominates your asking," McCarthy told a reporter who asked about the possibility that Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg's office will soon indict the former president in connection with a $130,000 payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016.

"We're excited about doing something to make sure we're not dependent on China. We're very excited about making sure children and parents have a say in their kids' education. We're excited about making America energy-independent, lowering the price of gasoline for everyone; sustaining a geopolitical world that's actually safer; and actually bringing down inflation," McCarthy said.

"So those are the things I'm focused mainly on. But I do get concerned when I look out there and see justice not being equal to others, especially in the history of where we are. And the tough part is, with a local D.A. playing at presidential politics. If that starts right there, don't you think it will happen across the country?"

McCarthy said he thinks the country can unite around the conclusion that "they want equal justice," and that what's going on with Trump -- "they just think it's wrong."

In response to another reporter, McCarthy said Republicans are not there "to defend President Trump," but rather to "defend...equal justice in America."

He noted that even some liberals agree with him that equal justice should be the standard.

"What we see before us is a political game being played by a local -- look, this isn't New York City -- this is just a Manhattan -- this is just a borough D.A., okay?"

McCarthy asked if the reporter wanted to "defend a borough D.A. who's taking up a case of a person who's a nominee for president -- don't talk about party or the name -- who others have already looked at and (said) it doesn't work; who's more than seven years beyond (the statute of limitations).

“I think if you really thought that way and looked at all the facts, you wouldn't ask me that question, or not in the same way."
