(CNSNews.com) – On Friday, the one-year anniversary of Russia invading Ukraine, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced an additional $2 billion of “additional security assistance” for Ukraine through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
According to a DoD press release released Friday, the $2 billion package will provide for the following capabilities:
As CNS News has previously reported, USAI enables the United States to purchase weapons directly from defense contractors, in order to send them to Ukraine. This differs from Presidential Drawdowns, which only allow the U.S. to send over its own DoD stocks to Ukraine.
This latest aid package comes on the one-year anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war, as Russian forces invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
“One year on,” according to the DoD, “the commitment of the United States, together with some 50 countries who have rallied to rush urgently needed assistance to Ukraine, has only strengthened.”
“The United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements for as long as it takes,” the DoD statement promised.
