(CNSNews.com) - Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida gave a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Sunday where he said that “teaching a second grader that they can change their gender” is “wrong.”
“I believe parents in the state of Florida should be able to send their kids to elementary school without having an agenda jammed down their throats,” said DeSantis.
“They should not be teaching a second-grader that they can choose their gender. That is wrong and that is not going to happen in the state of Florida,” he said.
In 2022, DeSantis signed Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Act.
One provision in this law states the following: “Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”
Here is a transcript of the part of Gov. DeSantis’ speech at the Reagan library that is wrong to teach “a second-grader that they can choose their gender:”
Gov. Ron DeSantis: “But when I am looking at these education issues, I am looking at them through the lens not just of a governor, but I am looking at them through the lens of a dad. And I believe parents in the state of Florida should be able to send their kids to elementary school without having an agenda jammed down their throats.
“They should not be teaching a second-grader that they can choose their gender. That is wrong and that is not going to happen in the state of Florida.
“And I know you have a company down the road in Burbank that had different ideas about that, but I can tell you this: Disney may have gotten everything they wanted in Florida for the last 60 years, but there is a new sheriff in town now and we are not backing down to that.”
