Construction of a detention center surrounded by alligators and pythons could house up to a thousand illegal immigrants, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier proposed Thursday.

"The governor tasked state leaders to identify places for new temporary detention facilities. I think this is the best one," AG Uthmeier says in a video suggesting that an “old, virtually abandoned airport facility right in the middle of the Everglades” be turned into a detention center for illegal aliens who are taken into custody.

“I call it, “Alligator Alcatraz,” AG Uthmeier says, noting that it would be suicidal to escape from the detention center, since it’s completely surrounded by the Everglades:

“If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them – other than alligators and pythons.

“Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide.”

“It presents an efficient, low-cost opportunity to build a temporary detention facility, because you don’t need to invest that much in the perimeter, the state attorney general says, promising that the renovated facility could be “up and running” in 30 to 60 days.

“Alligator Alcatraz. We're ready to go," AG Uthmeier says.

Florida has been stepping up its efforts to combat illegal immigration, as Florida’s Voice explains:

“The proposal comes as the state approved new anti-illegal immigration law earlier this year, and law enforcement agencies – both state and local – have signed onto agreements to work with the Trump administration to detain and arrest illegal aliens.”
