State of the Union viewership fell 28% this year, setting the record for the lowest audience for an official State of the Union address in the 30 years Nielsen has been reporting the statistic.
Biden’s 2021 address to Congress was lower, but it wasn’t an official State of the Union address, because he had been in office for only a few months, instead of a full year.
On Tuesday, an estimated 27.3 million people watched Pres. Biden’s address, down from 38.2 million in 2022. In contrast, 47,741,000 watched Donald Trump’s unofficial address to Congress in 2017 and 45,551,000 viewed his State of the Union in 2018.
By age group, Nielsen reports that only 5% of this year’s viewers were 18-34 years old, while nearly three-fourths (73%) were 55 and older.
Traditional broadcast networks garnered 59% of the viewership, while 41% watched the coverage on cable networks. Fox News coverage pulled in the most viewers (4.69 million), followed by ABC (4.41 million).
