


(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. trade deficit with the People’s Republic of China rose for the second straight year in 2022, hitting $382,917,000,000, according to data released today by the Census Bureau.
During the year, the United States imported $536,754,000,000 in goods from China, but only exported $153,837,000,000.
The Census Bureau has published the dollar value of U.S. goods imported from China and those exported to China going back to 1985. In the 38 years now on record, the U.S. has run a bilateral trade deficit with China in every year.
In 1985, the deficit was $16,297,607 in constant December 2022 dollars. By 1994, it exceeded $50 billion, hitting $58,497,160,000. By 1998 it exceeded $100 billion, hitting $103,086,530,000. By 2004, it exceeded $200 billion, hitting $253,056,170,000. The next year—2005—it exceeded $300 billion, hitting $305,058,600,000.
In 2012, the U.S. trade deficit with China exceeded $400 billion for the first time—hitting $407,321,730,000 in constant December 2022 dollars.
The U.S. trade deficit with China peaked at $494,084,260,000 in constant December 2022 dollars in 2018.
In 2019 and 2020 it dropped, hitting $395,726,450,000 in 2019, and $348,830,540,000 in 2020.
After that, the U.S.-China trade deficit started rising again. In 2021, it was $375,244,530,000 in constant December 2022 dollars; and, in 2022, it was $382,917,000,000.
