NextImg:Bears expect rookie QB Tyson Bagent to start again vs. Chargers as Justin Fields recovers

The Bears are likely to start rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent again this week when they visit the Chargers, coach Matt Eberflus said. Starter Justin Fields is still recovering from a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand, and the team still hasn’t seen enough progress to assume he’ll be back for this game.

“No change,” Eberflus said Monday. “He’s doubtful. He’s just not there yet. Bagent will be our starter until he’s cleared.”

Bagent started for Fields against the Raiders and played efficiently as the Bears won 30-12. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown for a 97.2 passer rating in his first NFL start.

He exceeded expectations and kept the offense running well, but there’s no question Fields will be the starter once he’s healthy.

Fields has completed 61.7% of his passes, is averaging 200.2 yards per game, 11 touchdown passes and has a 91.6 passer rating — all on track for career highs. He also has six interceptions for a 3.7% interception rate, which is in line with his career average.

The Bears did not put Fields on injured reserve last week, which would’ve been the logical time for that if they believed he’d be out longer than three games. The non-move indicated they believe he’ll return no later than Week 10 against the Panthers.
