Massachusetts State Police are investigating after two vehicles crashed on I-95 early Thursday morning, including one vehicle authorities said was traveling the wrong way.

The Newbury Fire Department responded at 12:05 a.m. Thursday to the northbound side of I-95 near exit 81 for a report of a two-vehicle crash. First responders found two passenger cars had crashed head-on on the highway, the department said in a statement.

“The operators of both vehicles, who were the sole occupants of the vehicles, were trapped inside the two cars, and firefighters began a lengthy and delicate extrication process to free both parties from the wreckage,” Newbury Fire Chief Dave Evans said.

Fire officials said that it became apparent during the response and rescue efforts “that one motorist was traveling southbound, the wrong way, in the northbound lane when the crash occurred.”

After almost an hour, first responders were able to free two adult male drivers, one of whom was taken by medical helicopter to a trauma center, according to the Newbury Fire Department.

The highway was closed in both directions during the initial response and portions of I-95 northbound remained closed early Thursday morning as officials continued their rescue efforts and investigation, the fire department said.

There was no additional information about the two drivers.
