NextImg:Writers Guild of America says members will picket David Zaslav at Boston University’s commencement

After previously issuing a warning shot to Boston University, the Writers Guild of America has confirmed that striking union members will picket at BU’s commencement when the head of Warner Bros. Discovery takes the stage.

BU recently announced that Warner Bros. Discovery’s David Zaslav would be this month’s commencement speaker amid the Hollywood writers’ strike.

The university has been in hot water since the announcement last week, and the Writers Guild of America has blasted the decision and warned of picketers at Nickerson Field later this month.

On Thursday, the union confirmed that members will picket the ceremony.

“The Writers Guild of America will picket Warner Bros. Discovery President & CEO David Zaslav at Boston University’s All-Student Commencement Exercises at Nickerson Field on Sunday, May 21, 2023, beginning at 12:00 p.m. EDT,” the Writers Guild of America, East, said in a statement on Thursday.

Zaslav, a BU Law alum from 1985, is pictured on a viral list of eight Hollywood CEOs who collectively made more than $773 million in 2021, according to the writers’ guild. Zaslav took home $246 million that year, the guild posted online.

Zaslav was asked about the writers’ strike during a TV appearance last week.

“Everybody deserves to be paid fairly,” Zaslav said on CNBC. “So our number one focus is let’s try and get this resolved. Let’s do it in a way that the writers feel that they’re valued, which they are, and they’re compensated fairly, and then off we go. Let’s tell great stories together.”

Last Thursday morning, BU tweeted about Zaslav in the commencement announcement, “He oversaw the launch of some of the fastest-growing networks in the US and the rise of popular channels, such as Animal Planet, HGTV, Food Network, & TLC.”

The university has not responded to multiple requests for comment about the criticism of the speaker pick.
