The Worcester County DA said his office will not handle the investigation of the death of Massachusetts State Police recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia due to a conflict of interest.
“Enrique Delgado Garcia was loved by everyone in our office; he’s a dedicated victim witness advocate who joined our office and was with us for about a year and a half before he left our office in April to fulfill a lifetime-long dream of joining the Massachusetts State Police,” said Worcester County DA Joseph Early at a press conference Monday. “Because of this close relationship, in this matter, there’s no way this office can handle this.”
Delgado-Garcia, 25, died after “a medical crisis suffered” during a boxing training exercise at the New Braintree Academy over the weekend. The recruit was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester where he was pronounced dead Saturday.
The DA said the office’s state police investigators started an investigation and will continue as they seek an independent investigation of the incident. Early did not state which agency may take over or whether it may be at the federal or state level, saying that he had spoken to a few.
Early noted the autopsy has been concluded, but results are not yet available.
Early also stated that their was video of the incident on Thursday, but did not speak to the content.
“This is a time of mourning for Enrique’s family, friends and loved ones,” said Early. “This includes many of us, his fellow Victim Witness Advocates Office employees who worked alongside Enrique within our office. This is a heartbreaking and tragic loss. Enrique constantly worked to make life better for others.”
