WESTFORD – A game that was playing out as advertised will need more than one day to complete.

With the wind howling and the rain pouring down, the high-level non-league baseball clash between Chelmsford and undefeated Westford Academy was suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning with the visiting Lions holding a 1-0 lead.

The game will be resumed Thursday at Westford Academy beginning at 5 p.m. and will be resumed from the exact moment it was suspended. Chelmsford starter Matthew Stuart threw five no-hit innings with eight strikeouts on 54 pitches. Stuart, however, will not be allowed to complete the contest due the MIAA’s pitch count rules. Older brother Caleb Stuart is expected to get the relief nod.

“Our guys are ready to get after it and are happy they get another Stuart ready to go,” Chelmsford coach Lou Distasti said.

Westford Academy (16-0) starter Matt Morash matched Stuart zero-for-zero through the five first innings allowing just a pair of soft contact singles. The Lions finally scratched a run off the highly touted Morash in the sixth. Grant Engelhardt singled, advanced to second on a groundout, moved to third on a wild pitch, and then Caleb Stuart executed a safety squeeze to perfection to put the Lions up 1-0.

As Matthew Stuart toed the rubber for the bottom of the frame, the rain picked up steam and came pouring down causing the umpires to clear the field and suspend the game until Thursday afternoon.

“Matt just competes all the time. I thought the way he approached their top hitters was outstanding,” Distasi said. “He mixed up his pitches. He used both halves of the plate. He has competed all year.”

Both Stuart and Morash showcased fastballs that tallied in the mid-80s consistently.
