NextImg:Will Patriots change kickers after missed game-tying field goal? Bill Belichick answers

Patriots rookie kicker Chad Ryland has missed 35-yard field goals in consecutive games, including a game-tying try in the final seconds of last Sunday’s loss to the Giants.

On Tuesday, the Patriots worked out five free-agent kickers. So will the team stick with Ryland heading into this weekend’s game against the Chargers?

“He’s on the roster, yeah,” coach Bill Belichick responded Wednesday during a morning press conference.

Asked about the tryouts, Belichick deflected.

“Yeah, we worked some guys out,” he said. “We usually do that this time of year.”

Belichick then interrupted a question about possibly signing a kicker to the open spot on the Patriots’ practice squad.

“Look, the guys that are here need to be ready to go. That’s what everybody’s job is,” he said.

Belichick later added the team intends to fill out its practice squad Wednesday.

On the season, Ryland is 12-of-18 on the field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards. He’s missed twice inside of 40 yards, twice between 40-49 yards and two more times on attempts 50 yards or longer. He’s made every extra point try.

On Sunday, Ryland said of his final miss: “I missed that kick. There’s no easy way around it. There’s no soft way around it. I missed the kick. I completely own that and take responsibility for that every day of the week. Protection was good. Snap was good. Hold was good. I’ve got to do a better job of making that kick.”
