FOXBORO — It’s still not clear what caused Jack Jones to walk off the Patriots’ practice field early Thursday just to return to take a knee on the sideline.

But the last person to talk to Jones before he left the field was Patriots veteran safety Jabrill Peppers, who walked with his arm around the young cornerback after a competitive play in practice.

“I was just giving him some wisdom,” Peppers said Sunday. “He’s an ultra-competitive kid, so I was just giving him some wisdom. That’s all.”

Jones broke up a pass intended for wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. After speaking with coaches and teammates, Jones walked off the practice field without attention from trainers. He returned roughly 20 minutes later.

“It’s football. It’s training camp,” Peppers said. “You know what I mean? Things come up, things happen. But that’s all part of football.”

Patriots coaches wouldn’t say what caused Jones to leave the field during video conference media availability Friday. Jones spoke to the media Friday for the first time this summer and would only say it was “just football” about the incident.

Jones participated in Friday night’s simulated scrimmage at Gillette Stadium. He was a full participant in Sunday’s session and received starting reps with Jonathan Jones out, so it appears whatever occurred Thursday at this point is water under the bridge.

Jones is also facing charges for allegedly bringing two loaded guns into Logan Airport in June.
