An emotional 20-hole semifinal victory over her sister Thursday afternoon left Morgan Smith a bit drained, but she recovered nicely.
The 20-year-old Westford resident defeated Julia Imai of Brookline and KOHR Golf in a 5 and 4 rout to capture the 121st Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown.
“I’m super excited. It means a lot. I didn’t really play my best. It was happy I could end it with a birdie,” she told The Herald.
Smith is now a two-time champion. The 2022 winner won the first two holes against Imai and never trailed. She was 3 up after five holes before Imai won No. 7. But victories on holes No. 8 and 11 gave Smith a 4 up lead and she ended the match with an eight-foot birdie putt on 14.
Smith edged her sister, Molly, is an exciting semifinal match to advance.
A two-time New England Women’s Am champ, Morgan Smith drove immediately after the final match to the University of Georgia, where she’s set to play her first season after transferring from Georgetown.
